A 70-year-old woman remains in hospital and is in a serious but stable condition after a collision with a Citroen van on Friday.

Police, collision investigators, ambulance and air ambulance teams were scrambled to the junction of Nelson Street and Denton Street, in Carlisle, shortly before 7pm.

The pedestrian, who is from Wigton, was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

An air ambulance was seen landing on the Richardson Street football pitch.

The woman’s injuries are not thought to be life threatening, said police.

Cumbria Police closed off Denton Street both ways while emergency services dealt with the incident.
