There are flood alerts on four rivers and a main road is closed as torrential weather batters the county.
The A595 at Loop Road in Whitehaven is closed this morning after a tree fell into the middle of the road.
Events due to take place today have also been cancelled because of the weather.
Cumbria Wildlife Trust cancelled its Beached Art event at St Bees beach earlier in the week, and organisers of Moss Bay family fun day in Workington made the difficult decision this morning to pull the plug on this afternoon's event.
There are also reports of traffic lights not working across West Cumbria.
The Environment Agency has placed flood alerts on the rivers Ehen, Calder, Irt and Esk.
River levels are rising at the Egremont river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall.
Environment Agency's incident response staff are checking defences and closely monitoring the situation.
