Cumbrian MP Rory Stewart has resigned from the cabinet after Boris Johnson was named Conservative Party leader.

The Penrith and the Border MP, who himself made it into the top four candidates, was International Development Secretary until today.

However he always said he would not serve in Mr Johnson's cabinet after clashing with his rival - who will tomorrow be confirmed as Prime Minister - over Brexit.

Mr Stewart has now confirmed his resignation in a tweet.

He said: "Congratulations @BorisJohnson on becoming Leader. Honour to serve in turn as Minister of Environment @DefraGovUK, Mid East +Asia @DFID_UK, Africa @FCO, Prisons @MoJGovUK + then Development Secretary in Cabinet +NSC.

"Backbench tomorrow serving Cumbria. Thank you all. More walking!"
