Copeland mayor, Mike Starkie is urging residents to follow in his footsteps and sign up to the blood donor register.
Each year the NHS needs new donors to replace those who can no longer donate.
Mr Starkie said: “Yesterday I signed up to become a blood donor. NHS staff visited a Copeland Borough Council office to encourage our employees to join the blood donor register.
“It goes without saying how vitally important this service is.
“Many people are only alive today because somebody decided to give blood.”
