A TRANSPLANT survivor hopes to add more medals to his collection when he returns to a national competition next week.

Daymon Johnstone, 29, of Seaton Park, is set to compete at the British Transplant Games in Newport next week.

Daymon had a vital kidney transplant when he was five.

He won a silver medal for squash last year and has collected a haul of silverware in more than 20 appearances in the games.

“For me it’s the social aspect as well as the competition,” he said.

“Learning people’s stories and being able to share my own with people who have gone on a similar journey.

“It is a way of promoting organ donation and proving that transplants do work. Just taking part is enough and if I come back with a medal, that’s a bonus.

“A lot of people have said to me that I wouldn’t be able to do sport because of the transplant but actually I can.

“You can still have a relatively normal life and achieve things after a transplant.

“I share the same dreams as a lot of people and there are a lot of people I have had to prove wrong in my life.”

Daymon will be competing in squash next Thursday, bowling and darts next Friday, then ball throw and the 4x100m relay next Sunday.
