A SECOND man accused of robbing a Carlisle city centre jewellery shop owner has appeared before a judge.

Daniel Burtak, 32, and Ashley John Entwistle, 35, jointly face one charge.

This alleges that they robbed the owner of St Nicholas Galleries of jewellery on the afternoon of June 6.

Both Burtak and Entwistle were charged following an incident at the Bank Street store at about 2.20pm which prompted a large response by police who cordoned off an area of the street as an investigation began.

At Carlisle Crown Court, Burtak pleaded not guilty to the robbery charge he faces during a short hearing in front of Judge James Adkin.

His denial came six days after a plea of not guilty was entered on behalf of Entwistle by Judge Adkin during a previous hearing at the court.

A trial for the two men - estimated to last three to four days - will now take place in front of a jury. This is due to start on November 4. A pre-trial review hearing is due to be held at the crown court on October 25.

In the meantime, Burtak, of no fixed abode, was remanded in custody. Entwistle, of Athlone Avenue, Bolton, Greater Manchester, was remanded in custody last week.
