Nearly 200 children will be safer this summer thanks to the combined efforts of eight schools.

Maryport Extended Schools' Partnership ran the event which was attended by all the town's infant schools as well as pupils from Dearham, Flimby schools and Our Lady & St Patrick's Primary School in Maryport and Richmond Hill, Aspatria.

Local services including Fire and Rescue, the Maryport branch of the Coastguards and the Police attended to show the children how they worked and to deliver simple messages on how to keep safe and out of trouble this summer.

On hand to help deliver the message were the award-winning Ewanrigg School Mini Police who were recently named the best Mini Police Force in the county.

Partnership co-ordinator Nicola Woolley said the safety day has become an annual event.

"It is a way for even the youngest children to learn about how to keep themselves safe in water and on land."
