The next vintage and antique toy sale in Cockermouth will take place on Saturday, July 20.

But this summer sale will have a wintry dimension too.

The sale, by auctioneers Mitchells, reflects Wimbledon season with an oak Slazenger tennis racket press from the 1920s, which could sell for between £120 and £180.

The theme is maintained by a pair of early 20th century ‘Ayres Patent Championship’ tennis posts, including net, estimated at £70 to £100.

Lots from midwinter include 1950s Christmas decorations perhaps worth £40 to £60.

Other collectables are a painted wooden bookcase in the form of a clinker built boat, which is expected to make £80 to £120.

A lot with a Cumbrian origin is a quirky Keswick Slate table lamp, decorated with miniature climbers spread across its glass shade, estimated at £30 to £50.

There is a wide selection of train, car and boat memorabilia, including a kit-built electric model boat which could sell for £80 to £120.

More valuable items include two marine stationary engines. A Japanese Saito T2R engine with its box and a Maxwell Hemmens of York marine engine both carry estimates of £150 to £250. Those likely to fetch the highest prices are an RLE Cooled Hit & Miss engine, estimated at £300 to £500, and a 3.5in gauge live steam Caledonian Railways locomotive. It has also been given an estimate of £300 to £500 but is likely to exceed it.

A number of teddy bears, created by famous German manufacturers Steiff, are included in the sale. A 1997 Steiff Club Edition ‘Picnic bear’ should make £50 to £80, while a Steiff Classic 1906 bear could be worth £70 to £100.

A range of Hubley figures are on sale. There is a pair of cast iron doorstops in the form of golfers and an American motorcycle patrol toy, both likely to fetch £30 to £50.

An illustrated catalogue with all the lots can be viewed online at www.mitchellsantiques.co.uk. Lots can also be viewed in person at the saleroom the day before the sale from 3pm to 7pm and from 8.30am to 10am on the sale day.

The auction starts at 10am. Those unable to attend can leave confidential bids in advance or bid live by phone or online during the sale via www.the-saleroom.com.
