A MOTHER whose baby daughter was hospitalised with breathing difficulties has launched a fundraising campaign to say thank you to the children's ward.

Six-month-old Ella Cook has been suffering from chest problems since she was born.

Initially it was put down to common childhood problems, but two weeks ago her condition worsened significantly.

Mum Claire Blaney, from Aspatria, said she was worried and took straight her to the GP.

The doctor was also concerned, and rang an ambulance to take baby Ella to hospital.

At Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary she was diagnosed with bronchiolitis - a potentially-serious chest infection that si quite common in babies and toddlers.

In Ella's case it was particularly severe, and her mum said she was struggling to breathe.

"She was really bad. They put her on oxygen and she was admitted to the children's ward.

"She's only six months old and had to be put on a drip too," explained Claire.

"It was really worrying. I didn't know if she was going to be alright. It was such a stressful time, but the staff on the ward were absolutely fantastic.

"They were so friendly and looked after me as well as Ella, reassuring me and making sure I was eating. They were amazing."

Dad Barry Cook was also beside himself with worry, so children's ward staff also made it possible for him to stay with them.

Now the couple, who also have a three-year-old son, Reece Cook, want to give something back and have organised a fundraising event for the hospital.

The family fun day will take place at Aspatria community centre on Saturday, August 17.

Ella was in hospital for five days. She is now back home and making a good recovery.

"She's perfect now. She's got a bit of a cough still but they've said that will take a few weeks to clear up. Apart from that she's fine. It's such a relief.

"I can't thank the staff in Carlisle enough," added Claire.

While on the children's ward, Claire was chatting to staff about what items they need.

She has now decided to raise funds for Christmas decorations for the ward, Christmas presents for those in hospital over the festive season, and new pens, books and other items for the playroom.

The fun day runs from 9.30am to 3.30pm and will include a bouncy castle, face painting, table top sale and grand raffle.

Claire works as a sewing machinist at Sealy, though is currently on maternity leave.

She said her employer and many other local businesses are supporting the event, with a brand new king size bed among the prizes. She thanked all those who have donated prizes and time.
