LEARNING disabilities should not be a barrier to sporting success and an active life.

That was the message from a special sports day in Carlisle which championed the benefits of exercise for all.

More than 70 people took part in the event at Harraby cycle track, organised by Carlisle Mencap as part of National Learning Disability Week.

People of all abilities were encouraged to get involved with sport in the community and different sporting events were on offer.

Mencap aims to improve access to sport for people with learning disabilities.

By hosting the sport day people of all abilities, including those with learning disabilities, were given the same opportunities to take part.

The days biggest feature was the Mencap mile and the all ability CrossFit sessions.

Run, walk or be pushed in a wheelchair, everyone was encouraged to complete two laps of the track.

Special guests arrived in there droves and the Mayor of Carlisle, Marylyn Bowman, lead the way with her consort.

Miss England finalist, Claire Bell, spent her time walking round the track helping and encouraging other walkers.

Sheila Gregory Carlisle Mencap CEO said: "We had a fantastic time at Harraby, the sun shone and everyone enjoyed themselves.

"There were however serious reasons for holding the event.

"It’s really important for our members to keep fit- many people with learning disability die much earlier than their peers- often 20 years earlier – so exercise is really important in keeping people well. "We have employed sports development workers to support people to live healthy lives for the last two years.

"It’s amazing to see how people’s fitness has improved by taking regular exercise.

"Two years ago I doubt some of the people here could have walked once around the track never mind twice or six times as some did."
