A Workington couple will take part in a march in London tomorrow, Wednesday, June 24, calling for action to tackle climate change.

Valerie and Rick Hallard will join the "The Time is Now" lobby run by the charity Christian Aid.

They will be among an estimated 10,000 people descending on Westminster to speak to their MPs about the need for action on climate change.

The couple, who are members of St John's Church in Workington, have previously taken part in other action, including the International Climate March in Keswick spring 2017.

Valerie said: "We are the generation who have always known we need to protect our wonderful natural environment.

"My biology teacher at school was a leading campaigner against the introduction of plastic milk bottles.

"Professor Derek Bryce-Smith, the father of a schoolfriend, was the first to evidence the harm done by lead additives in petrol and was a determined campaigner.

"We are both keen to see the phasing out of fossil fuels and the development of alternative energy sources, as well as care for the local environment and reduction in plastic use.

"We were very disappointed that the tidal barrage project was not supported by the government (against National Audit Office advice) as the Solway would produce reliable and predictable energy production.

"We will ask Sue Hayman to pursue this with the government in the light of the recent statement of commitment to improving our carbon targets."

Christian Aid wants the Government to commit to setting a 2045 deadline to hit net zero greenhouse-gas emissions, and to move towards a greener, fairer economic model.

Dr Alison Doig, Christian Aid’s global climate lead, said: “It’s vital that we bring an end to the fossil fuel era, including oil and gas, while promoting energy efficiency, renewables and under-addressed emissions from transport and industry.
