Organisations will compete to win a share of £50,000 financial support aimed to improve the Mirehouse and Corkickle communities.

Well Whitehaven, a project set up to benefit residents in both areas, is holding its third open event tomorrow at Valley School, from 6pm until 8pm.

Members of the community are openly invited to attend to have their say.

There are four local community organisations seeking a share of the £50,000: Always Another Way, New Rainbow Pre School, Together We, and Mirehouse Community Centre Association.

The range of projects put forward by the organisations include support for offenders, upgrades of outdoor space at the pre-school, fitness and wellbeing sessions for adults and a kitchen upgrade for the community centre.

Mirehouse and Corkickle residents will be invited to vote on the projects they feel will benefit their community and will be given the opportunity to put forward questions to the proposers.

Paula Ratcliffe, Well Whitehaven Project Lead, said: “Previous events have shown us the importance of ensuring local residents vote on projects that are delivered within their own community.

“Being part of the decision-making is very empowering and residents can then feel a sense of ownership and an affiliation to a project being delivered in their neighbourhood."

Previous events have seen residents vote for eight projects providing an investment of £135k directly to the Mirehouse and Corkickle communities.
