Councillors will discuss plans for 370 new homes on the outskirts of Whitehaven next week.

It is recommended that members of Copeland’s planning panel agree to visit the earmarked land at Harras Moor before making any decisions on the application.

Homes England is seeking outline planning permission for the major development on land which sits between the Highlands and Hillcrest estates.

In a report for councillors, it says: “A significant number of representations have been received from interested parties in respect to the proposed development.

“On this basis it is considered appropriate for members to undertake a site visit to gain a full understanding of the site and its context and fully appraise all of the material planning considerations prior to the determination of this application.”

The site would be accessed via Harras Road and Caldbeck Road onto Red Lonning.

Out of the 370 homes, 15 per cent of them would be affordable, states the planning application.

It would be a traditional estate with several cul-de-sacs arranged around one main road.

Copeland’s planning panel will meet on Wednesday afternoon to discuss plans, where they are being urged to agree to a site visit.
