Name: Anazao Tearoom

Where: Cecil Street, Carlisle,

Website: Facebook

Telephone: 01228 599367

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm.

Owner/chef: Mother and daughter Elaine and Katie Goodchild.

History: We started in January 2018 when we bought the business and moved it into new, fully accessible premises.

Katie finished her A levels in June 2017 and started work on the tearoom shortly after. She had previous experience in tearooms from the age of 15 and it had always been a dream to open her own.

Style of food: Simple, but all home made cakes, scones and traybakes and all meals are freshly prepared to order.

Menu sample: Jacket potatoes, sandwiches, paninis and toasties are all available with various fillings.

The most popular dishes are goat’s cheese and caramelised onion chutney panini (£6.25); freshly made soup with a warm white roll (£3.95); homemade fruit or plain scone with jam and clotted cream (£2.50), we also have cheese scones and special lemon drizzle scones (£2). Afternoon tea includes savoury pastries, sandwiches, a scone with jam and cream, a slice of cake and a pot of tea or coffee (£15).

Anazao always tries to have gluten free options available. The most popular gluten free cake is the lemon drizzle (£2.40 a slice). A new addition that is proving popular are the gluten free cheese scones (£2).

Bacon rolls are served all day everyday.

Take away options are available however, as they are prepared fresh to order, they do take a little longer.

Anazao serves a variety of traybakes, including millionaire shortbread, peanut butter slice, white chocolate and cranberry and Crunchie tiffin (£2.20).

Specials change regularly. Examples are toasted pita bread with hummus (£2.50); bacon, brie and cranberry panini (£6.25); hummus and falafel wrap (£5.50).

In their own words: “We are a family run business, our aim is to always be welcoming to customers both regular and new.

“We love talking to all our customers and take time to get to know them whenever we can, building a friendly relationship with them.

“Myself and mum bake everything ourselves and are constantly looking for new recipes and ideas to try.”
