A NEW bike track is to be built in the Newtown area of Carlisle.

The new facility will be installed at the bottom of Raffles Avenue, close to the concrete MUGA (multi-use games area).

It will be built during the week of Give a Day to the City, which starts on June 30. Give a Day to the City is all about showcasing the very best of community spirit in Carlisle.

It is hoped that the track will be installed free of charge by local companies as part of the initiative, with most of the equipment also paid for.

Councillor for Newtown and Morton North, Les Tickner, said: “A lot of it will be done during the Give a Day scheme, where people give their time for nothing.

“It is going to be like the one at Hammond’s Pond, where we got somebody with a JCB to create it.

“It is something that has come up in discussions with the younger ones, they say they will use it. Instead of just hanging around, they said they would use this instead.”

Pamela Birks, who is also a councillor for the ward, commented: “People have been saying we could do with a bike track for the younger kids.

“Riverside are involved as well, as they have social housing in the area.”
