Workington Town coach Chris Thorman was delighted at his side’s 10-try display in West Wales on Saturday as they ran out 58-12 winners.

There were 10 different try-scorers in a good all-round attacking display, but despite a number of errors from Town during the game, Thorman refused to be deflated.

He said: “For my point of view, we asked the players to improve on a couple of things today as there were certain aspects of the game against Leigh that were unacceptable. They did what we practised, we had more line speed from the centre and defended well and everything else then came together.

“In the first half, our ruck speed was quick and we had a lot of one on one wins. I thought we were pretty clinical, especially in the first half – we’ve been working on a few things and it was good to see them come off.

“Also I’m doubly pleased with the performance as it was very windy today and that affects the players’ timing massively. It’s hard to be too critical, as at a times it did get a bit scrappy, as there were lots of positives to take out of that game.

Man of the Match Carl Forber, and his half-back partner Jamie Doran dominated the game. Whilst there were errors from others, this vital combination saw Town through for their big win.

“Carl and Jamie in the halves were excellent today,” Thorman added.

“As I highlighted, offensively they controlled the game really well and I’ve been asking them to do that. I was a bit angry at them at training last week as some things weren’t working and body language was poor but today it came together.”

Thorman was also pleased with his newcomers – Blain Marwood who scored just a couple of minutes after coming on for his club debut, and Welshman Calvin Wellington - who is Regan Grace’s cousin. Wellington stems from Port Talbot, just 20 miles east of Llanelli, and the Town coach was pleased to see him shining in his home country on his Town league debut.

“I thought Calvin Wellington, on his league debut for us, went really well,” Thorman said. “He’s quite an athlete and he looked really composed and assured. His carries and yardage were really good too.

“Young Blain, who’s a very popular member of our squad and doesn’t miss a training session, is only on trial for a month, has been great. For him to score with virtually his first touch of the ball was a really pleasing thing and that’ll last in his memory for a while.”

“We’ve three wins out of five in my short tenure so far and I’ll probably take that as it includes a defeat in the Cup to Leigh last week. I’m quite content with that as I can see we can improve more, we’re capable of learning and adapting and I know there’s more to come from this side.
