Dramatic video has emerged of the moment two masked men sped off from the scene of a robbery in Carlisle city centre.

The terrifying raid on a jewellers shop in Bank Street earlier today triggered a major police response, with a police cordon set up around the crime scene.

Police have confirmed that two suspects have been arrested.

In the meantime, the News & Star has been given a short video clip which shows the two robbers - their faces hidden by balaclavas - speeding away from Bank Street in a blue Ford Fiesta car.

Their car had been parked immediately outside the St Nicholas Galleries jewellery shop.

It was later found abandoned in nearby Chiswick Street.

The video shows passers-by staring in shock as the car speeds off before crossing Lowther Street and speeding along Lonsdale Street.

The faces of the robbers remained hidden throughout the video.

An eyewitness who saw the drama unfold told the News & Star: "I was outside the Halifax [bank] when I saw heard some commotion.

"When I turned around I saw two men in balaclavas running out of the jewellers."

"They started the car and raced of down Lonsdale Street towards Warwick Road.

"The police reaction time was very impressive and before long the place was swarming with uniformed and armed police.

"The bloke who ran the jewellers got assaulted by the assailants, but considering his age he's obviously hard as nails as he was up and handling the situation well."

Paramedics treated the male shop worker from the jeweller's shop at the scene, while a large stretch of Bank Street remained cordoned as police worked at the scene.

Meanwhile, Cumbria Police say that the two suspects are currently being held in connection with the robbery. There was a major police response following the raid, which happened at about 2.20pm.

Initial reports suggested three people were involved but police have now been confirmed that there were only two. Officers are continuing to appeal for information and are asking people to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Harkins said: “We can confirm that following swift actions by officers this afternoon two men are now in custody.

“We are continuing to appeal for witnesses to this incident.

“This is a busy part of the city centre so we would urge anybody who saw anything suspicious in this area to contact us.

“If anybody saw anything that might be relevant please contact us on the numbers below.”

Police appealed for information about the blue Ford Fiesta involved, which was found abandoned in the Chiswick Street a short time later.

Call police with information on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

It is the second time that the jewellers has been targeted by robbers in the space of three months.

There was a robbery there at the end March.
