TWO men are set to be deported after being arrested in immigration raids in north Cumbria.

The pair were apprehended in an operation involving Home Office staff, supported by officers from Cumbria police.

They are the latest in a series to have taken place across the region to clampdown on illegal working in the county.

The Home Office has confirmed that two arrests - one in Carlisle, another in Wigton - were made on Friday.

In Carlisle, a man described as a Bulgarian national was apprehended in Lightfoot Drive, Harraby, after “being identified as suitable for deportation from the UK”.

A second man, an Iraqi, was arrested at Kaz’s Cut, on West Street, Wigton.

The Home office say this was for alleged immigration offences.

A spokeswoman said: “Both males are in police custody and are to be removed from the UK imminently.

“This operation was a great example of joint working with police and immigration enforcement.”

Cumbria Roads Police tweeted about their involvement in the operation, posting a picture of the scene in Carlisle and describing it as an early-morning raid.

Any concerns can be raised with officers by calling 101.
