THOUSANDS of people made the most of their third day off this bank holiday at a popular Carlisle gala day.

Hammond’s Pond welcomed scores of people to Upperby gala as they enjoyed a fun fair, entertainment, charity and food stalls, face painting and vintage vehicle displays.

It was an ideal day to take a boat out on the water or play in the park.

Jayne Barton, a dance teacher for Carlisle Dance Academy, was there with four groups. They were giving the crowds a taster of what is to come in their summers shows that begin on July 13.

Jayne said: “It’s exciting and it’s nice for the girls to get out into the community.”

Becka Smith, of Upperby, was there with her family. They go every year to the annual event.

“It’s nice for the children,” she said. “They love it and we come every year.”

Kieran Nixon, an entertainer with Shooting Stars Entertainment, said: “It’s absolutely amazing. The kids love it and the adults love it

too.

“It’s a lovely event and people come every year no matter what the weather, it could be rain, hail or shine.”

Ailsa Smith of Upperby has been attending the gala for 30 years. She said: “I like that there is lots of community stuff going on.

“It’s a really good event and people who are not from this area are here too. It’s nice to see so many people here.”

Carlisle Eden Mind had a stall at the event. They had quiet periods before seeing an influx of people asking about the services and asking for information.

The free event is organised by Carlisle City Council and has become a firm favourite for families.

Luke Leathers, health and wellbeing manager for the city council, said: “It’s gone really well. We’re really pleased with it and the weather has stayed with us too.

“We’re expecting about 5,000 people to come through today. People will be coming and going as the day goes on and we’re really pleased with how the stalls and people are engaging.”
