Family and friends of a 10-year-old girl who died are retracing her final journey on foot to raise money in her memory.

Miley Todd, of Allonby, passed away on October 19 last year at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, five days after she woke up feeling sick and was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital.

Now her dad Dom, brother Jake and other relatives and people who had met her are walking between the two hospitals over four days to raise money for Smile for Miley, a charity they are setting up in her name to help other sick children and their families.

The group set off yesterday from the Whitehaven hospital and were also joined by David Owen, Miley’s headteacher at Allonby Primary School, for the first stretch.

The walkers are wearing bright t-shirts in lime green – which was the youngster’s favourite colour – and bearing the charity’s logo to raise awareness.

It was Dom who came up with the idea of repeating his daughter’s last trip after taking up walking to help him cope with his grief.

Jake said: “He wanted to do it because after Miley died he started walking for something to do.

“He wanted to do that route to try to raise a bit of money.

“Everyone who heard about it wanted to join in and do it with him.

“Along the way so far we’ve been getting people beeping their horns and showing their support and everything which is great.

“It’s been good and we’ve had perfect weather for it to start off but the blisters are already starting to set in now and we’re only about an eighth of the way through the trip.

“It’s going to feel fantastic when we get to the RVI and get to see the people that we met when Miley was in the hospital.”

One woman even brought a box of ice lollies out to refresh the walkers as they headed for their first stop at The Thomas Henry pub in Maryport yesterday afternoon.

A priority for Smile for Miley will be to ensure relatives have the support and assistance that Miley’s family did while she was in hospital.

“We’re in the process of getting our registered charity number now,” Jake added.

“All these funds will pretty much go to the Sick Children’s Trust because it’s amazing how much they help the families of sick children all over the UK.”
