Firefighters from Carlisle's east and west stations tackled a fierce blaze in a mechanical grass cutting machine.

The crews were called out at around 10pm to a field near Prior Rigg Farm, west of the city.

"It was completely destroyed," said a senior firefighter who was at the scene.

"The owner had just finished using it and it started to smoke.

"It happened really quickly.

"He turned around and saw flames.

"It was in the middle of a field so fortunately there was nothing for the fire to spread to. It was well alight."

The intensity of the blaze meant the fire could be seen from miles around.
