An evening of nostalgia and some of the most evocative pop songs of the Sixties and Seventies are promised in The Summer of Love.

The show returns to the legendary summer of 1967 to recall some critical cultural and historical events of the past 50 years.

Sam Giffard plays the lead role in the show which travels from 1967 to 1973 and comes to The Sands Centre on Sunday.

She plays Caroline, who meets a boy called Johnny in the summer of love of 1967, shortly before he is shipped off to fight in the Vietnam war.

She joins a hippy group in San Francisco and the story follows both of them over the following years, through flowers, psychedelia, freedom, peace and love and songs including California Dreaming, San Francisco, Turn Turn, Turn, Somebody To Love, Happy Together, Brown Eyed Girl, All Along The Watchtower, Respect and more.

It also includes original film footage from the period and live band on stage.

Although she has appeared in musicals such as Hairspray and Hair, this is more of a challenge for Sam.

She explains: “Normally, with a musical, you only have to sing in one style, but this has a range of different music.”

She sings lung-bursting rock and soul numbers such as Piece of My Heart by Janis Joplin and Proud Mary by Tina Turner along with more gentle numbers such as Dedicated to the One I Love by the Mamas and the Papas.

“I’m a bit more of a rocker,” she admits, adding that the production designed to portray the period, rather than be a tribute show.
