Dancing, laughing, and walking was used to raise money and awareness for refugees.

A day of fundraising and laughter at Talkin Tarn on May 5 has raised £50 for local refugee families.

A total of 60 people turned up to laugh their way around the popular route.

The sponsored laughter walk was organised by Carlisle Refugee Action Group, Laughter Aspirations, and Penrith and Eden Refugee Network to raise money but also to raise awareness.

Keith Adam, laughter yoga teacher, said: “It is about raising awareness and especially, on Sunday last, new refugee families from Syria and I think one from Iraq joined us and saw for the very first time beautiful Talkin Tarn.

“The children had a wonderful time, running free and safe - and especially with two donkeys that also joined us.”

There was an abundance of activities taking place to make a day out at Talkin Tarn even more exciting.

Maz Burgess, from Lets Dance, volunteered to teach people how to line dance, Syrian men performed a dabke dance, and the day ended with a Syrian feast.

This is the second year that the Laughter Walk has taken place, although Mr Adam remarked that “this year the weather was against us”.

Adrienne Gill, from Carlisle Refugee Action Group, said: “Carlisle Refugee Action Group members really enjoyed our laughter afternoon at Talkin Tarn last Sunday.

“It was a real pleasure to combine the fundraiser with a genuine fun filled afternoon with friends at a place we all know and love.”

Last year, the group managed to raise £500 to go towards the three causes.

World Laughter Day is held on the first Sunday in May as a way to get people thinking positively about world peace.
