Lisa Muir, Slimming World consultant.

Employer: I’m self-employed within the Slimming World franchise.

Age: 38.

Where are you from? I’m originally from Yorkshire, and then I moved over to Cumbria.

Where do you live now? I currently live in Deanscales, in the Cockermouth area.

Where do you work? I run group sessions once a week from the Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth, but I do all of the behind-the-scenes business at home.

How long have you done this job? I signed up to become a consultant at the end of March, after being involved with Slimming World for 20 years, and officially launched my Cockermouth group in April, which I was really excited for.

Take us through a typical day: A typical day with group involves looking after members, getting to know new members, and having a look over people’s sheets. Then we usually have weigh-ins for existing members, which is followed by therapy and a chat to support the group and discuss individual achievements, and make sure everyone feels happy and looked after.

Outside group, there’s been a lot of promoting my group, such as leafleting at car boots and bingo - just getting plenty of interest in the group, really. It’s great because I can fit the job in around my other job and my family by working from home, so it’s really good.

What do you like most about the job? I most enjoy helping people to achieve what I’ve achieved - it’s an amazing feeling knowing I’m helping other people to reach their goal.

What do you like least? Nothing at all - I love it! When you’re passionate about something, it really doesn’t feel like work. It doesn’t feel like a job at the moment, because it’s so great!

Why did you want to do this job? I want to reach out to others, and help them to achieve their weight loss dreams and feel as good as I do since reaching my goal weight.

I want people to come along with absolutely no judgement, grab a cuppa, join the Slimming World family and make their dreams come true - just like I did.

What jobs have you done previously? I have a second job as a confectioner at Sainsbury’s - an odd combination of jobs, I know! I get to make all the cakes and pastries, and then help people with their weight. And before that, I ran a pre-school in Cockermouth.

What qualifications or experience do you need? As long as you’ve been to group plenty of times before, and have reached (or are near) your target weight, that’s all you need. No formal qualifications are needed to become a consultant, as long as you’re enthusiastic and dedicated, then you’re set.

What is a typical salary for this job? On average, consultants earn between £100 and £400 for working 10 to 20 flexible hours per week.

Any advice for people wanting to get into your profession? Just go for it! If you’re worried because you aren’t at your target weight yet, that doesn’t matter - sign up anyway. Get in touch with your consultant and ask for advice, and there are always opportunity events to go to if you’re interested.

Slimming World is such a good company. They provide all the training you need, and they’re always looking for new consultants, so just get involved and go for it!
