An auction taking place in Carlisle next week will feature an unusual selection of antiques for sale, with pistols, medals - and dolls’ houses.

The Thomson Roddick sale will be held at its Marconi Road site on Wednesday from 10am to 5pm and opens with coins and military memorabilia. It will be followed by a range of vintage toys, including a collection of hand-built dolls’ houses from a single collector.

The weapons include a Victorian twin-barrelled percussion pistol with an estimate of £2,000 to £3,000.There is also a Japanese officer’s sword from World War Two.

It comes with its scabbard and could sell for £350 to £400. Most of the medals belonged to Lancashire collector Roy Bolt, who would research the background of each soldier named, without the help of the internet but trailing through microfiche films.

Two went to men killed at the Battle of the Somme. A Lance Corporal HF Andrew died on September 26 1916, aged only 25. His medals and cap badge could go for £300 to £500.

A much higher estimate is attached to the medals of Lance Corporal F Seymour, who died on the first day of the Somme, July 1 1916, aged 35. He won a Distinguished Conduct Medal earlier that year for going out under heavy shell fire, bandaging wounded men and braving machine gun fire searching for and finding four other men. His medals could fetch £1,200 to £1500.

Two of the coins in the sale commemorate the 500th anniversary of the sovereign, from 1489 to 1989.

One is a full sovereign valued at £800 to £1,200 and the other is a half-sovereign possibly worth £250 to £300. A George III guinea from 1787 could sell for £300 to £500, and a Victorian Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry cavalry military saddle cloth, with a royal crown above the regimental initials, could fetch the same price.

And there is a smock, expected to sell for £30 to £50, given as a thank-you present to Norman Hammond. who made five trips in a small boat to rescue soldiers from Dunkirk.

The dolls’ houses came from a professional collector from Maryport who had a dedicated building erected just for his hand-built houses and accessories.

One is a mock Tudor thatched house of half-timbered design, which could sell for £250 to £300.

For an estimated £300 to £500 there is an entire street, featuring a pub, record shop, toy shops, jewellers and laundrette - although its lighting and power controls would need to be checked by a qualified electrician.

Items can be viewed from 10am to 5pm on Tuesday or at www.thomsonnroddick.com.
