LOCAL authority decision-makers have granted permission for demolition and conversion work at a former town infant school.

Carlisle City Council’s development control committee decided last week to grant the developers of the former Brampton Infant School permission to demolish part of the structure and convert the former lunch hall into a private property.

Another planning application submitted by the developers to build four new houses on the site is still to be decided on by the city council.

The council’s development control committee also decided that a historical survey of the former infant school building should be conducted before any construction work takes place.

Additional stipulations have been attached to the plans which were granted permission, including the type of windows to be used, in order to preserve the architectural and historic interest of the Victorian-era building.

In order to prevent disturbances to residents nearby to the site, the developers have been instructed by the city council’s committee not to carry out any work on the building’s frontage before 7.30am, Monday to Saturday, and not after 6pm on weekdays or after 1pm on Saturdays.

No work will be allowed to take place on Sundays, or on bank holidays.

In addition, the development control committee ruled that the site developers F Scott Builders must ensure any access gates installed at the site open inwards, away from the road.

The committee said that this should be done in the interests of highway safety.
