A dazzling spectacle lit up one of Cumbria’s most popular fells.

The Lakeland Festival of Light is now in its fifth year, and the mountain-based art spectacle captured the hearts of the community once more on Saturday.

The event series, which is organised by Matt Le Voi of Lakeland Mountain Guides, encourages people to line the spine of the popular Lakeland Fell, Catbells.

An ‘arctic chill’ in the forecast wasn’t enough to discourage people for Saturday night’s event, and an event record saw more than 2,000 people descend on Keswick to participate in the event - and hundreds more to just admire from a distance.

People paid a donation to take part and that, coupled with a raffle, saw this year’s festival smash the organiser’s £13,000 target, with more than £15,000 raised.

The beneficiary charity for this year is the Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs, which trains search dogs and supports their handlers.

As night fell on the evening Matt said he knew the set-up along the spine was going to be the toughest yet.

“We were almost overwhelmed on the mountain,” he admitted, “but as always, with the support of the fantastic marshalls and help from the participants. we got everyone in place.

“After that it was over to the work of our talented event photographers who yet again worked their magic perfectly.”

The event attracted people from all over the UK, with many using it as the chance to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. There was even a hen party on the mountain and an engagement.

Matt said the event will “no doubt” return for 2020, but thanked everyone who made the event happen this year, from raffle prize donors and cake bakers to the participants themselves.

Over the past four years the Lakeland Festival of Light series has raised more than £47,000 for charity.
