SEASCALE School’s lollipop ladies can feel happy and safe in their job – thanks to a handy new bodycam.

Anna Oaten and Karen Wake, the school crossing patrols, share the helpful gadget so it is used by each of them on their alternating shifts, and feel much safer now that they have the equipment to provide protection and offer a deterrent to drivers.

Both women felt nervous in their roles because of the constant stream of traffic on the 30mph road outside the primary school – especially with some drivers rushing past at much higher speeds.

The school and students have written letters to ask for help in this matter, calling for the road speed to be reduced to 20mph or for traffic-slowing measures to be put in place, but they have faced many hurdles, and the speed limit remains at the higher speed.

Having the bodycam gives Anna and Karen a sense of security in their job, as they can now deter those driving past the school from speeding and driving dangerously, as well as having the ability to provide evidence of wrongdoings by drivers if needed to – a previously difficult task.

The bodycam was sponsored by LLWR Ltd and headteacher Avril Spencer praised the company for its support.

“We’re really pleased they now have the bodycam, and everybody definitely feels safer now that Anna and Karen have that backup should they need it,” she said.

An LLWR spokesman explained the sponsorship for the bodycam, and said: “It was requested by Seascale School’s headteacher, Mrs Spencer, for the school’s lollipop ladies to be given a bodycam, and we were delighted to help.

“There’s obviously nothing more important than the safety of children, and we’re glad to deter bad driving while keeping the children safe.”

Mrs Spencer expressed her thanks to LLWR for the bodycam, saying: “We’re really grateful to have that extra layer of safety for our lollipop ladies, and it’s a great way to help keep them and our children safe.”
