A former soldier who has seen frontline action in Iraq has spoken of his disgust after being branded a “fascist” as his election victory was announced.
Peter Little, who served his country for 11 years, was voted into the Maryport South Ward as an Independent borough councillor this morning.
As the result was declared Andrew Lawson, a former Labour councillor and mayor of Workington, was heard to shout “fascist”.
He was briefly escorted out of the count and it is understood he was asked to calm down by Returning Officer Andrew Seekings.
Mr Little, who served in the Royal Logistic Corps in Germany and Iraq, said: “It’s quite disgusting. I have never had any beliefs like that. I am left of centre. I think he should apologise.”
He admitted that his election victory had been marred somewhat by the outburst but said he would “rise above it”.
Mr Lawson was later allowed to return to the count and no official action was taken.
He declined to comment.
