It's the end of an era for St Benedict's School as its former building is being demolished.

Staff and pupils from the secondary school moved into their new building within Campus Whitehaven in January.

The new campus was developed on part of the existing St Benedict's site, and is shared with Mayfield School.

The old St Benedict's building, which opened in April 1971, is now being knocked down and the site will be used as a playing field by Campus Whitehaven in the future.

Acting headteacher Steve Bridgman said: “Seeing the demolition of our old school buildings has been quite sad for some of our staff and students who have many happy memories of the school.

"However, we are very pleased with our new buildings and whilst some might see this moment as the end of an era we consider it the start of a new one.”

Campus Whitehaven was part of a £33 million investment from a range of partners including Britain’s Energy Coast, Copeland Community Fund, Cumbria County Council, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Ltd.
