Youngsters made their way into school rocking spiky hair, leather jackets and band t-shirts - and Elvis was even seen entering the building!

Orgill Primary School pupils dressed up as rockstars for the launch of the times tables rockstars app, which aims to make arithmetic more exciting.

Children are inspired to become ‘rockstars’ through fun yet structured daily practice and each week focuses on a different times table.

They have the opportunity to become ‘rock gods’ if they answer maths questions in under a second.

Orgill initially trialled the app on Key Stage Two pupils but have now decided to roll it out to the rest of the school because it has been such a success.

Molly Edgar, year three teacher, said: “I heard about it from other schools using it.

“We had been using the current sytsem for years. We needed something different, new, fresh and exciting.

“As soon as I found out about it I knew the kids would absolutely love it. It’s amazing.

“They absolutely love it. Any opportunity they get to play on it, they are on it.”

She said the app has been a valuable tool for youngsters to improve their maths skills, particularly those who may have been struggling.

“It’s incredible. To see them struggling and then gaining in confidence. We have seen a massive difference in their confidence in maths.

“It’s torn down the barriers. They have got more solid foundations to build on. They would really struggle without this.

“Seeing the difference it has made has been incredible.”

Ms Edgar said the launch event was to signify the “big change” the app will bring and to shatter the stereotype that learning times tables is boring.

Pupils enjoyed a battle of the bands contest, with classes going head to head to answer arithmetic questions.

“We wanted to make a massive deal about times tables and how much fun they can have,” she added.

“We couldn’t recommend it enough. Education is moving towards technology - that’s what children are interested in.”
