IT was the greatest day of their lives - and there was not a dry eye in the house.

Bride Sophie Rowley, who is living with an incurable brain tumour, and groom Lee Brown tied the knot in a perfect ceremony at The Crown Hotel in Wetheral yesterday morning.

About 30 guests watched Sophie, 25, arrive at the hotel in a stylish pink Cadillac with her flower girl daughters Keira and Jasmine Green and her sister - maid of honour Liv Rowley.

The bridesmaids - Lee’s sister Chloe Brown, 24 and daughter Courtney Brown, 13, walked down the aisle with the flowergirls.

Lee’s son, Cody Brown, 12, was dressed in a matching suit to that of his dad.

Then came the bride, dressed in a beautiful lace gown and veil. Sophie walked down the aisle with her dad John Paul Rowley to a song called Fireflies by Owl City sung by Gemma Bell.

“I’m feeling good,” she said.

Sophie was carrying a beautiful bouquet of lillies and roses. “They smell good,” she said.

The aisle was adorned with burning candles and guests sat on covered white chairs tied with satin ribbons.

Sophie, who was determined to walk, was watched on by the guests and her fiance.

On arrival at the altar, they paused for a kiss.

Lee, 33, said: “I didn’t see Sophie on the morning of the wedding so I couldn’t wait for her to arrive. She looks beautiful.”

The ceremony was conducted by Deputy Superintendent Registrar Pauline Barbour, accompanied by her colleague Bridget Fenton.

Vows were said before they both declared: “I do,” and Pauline officially declared them husband and wife.

Lots of kisses followed and the guests clapped in approval, many dabbing tissues to wipe away tears of joy and happiness.

“Yeah, I’m married,” said Sophie.

Pauline said: “May the feelings you have today grow deeper and stronger in the future.”

They both signed the register to Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours by Stevie Wonder.

Then Greatest Day by Take That played as the couple made their way back down the aisle for photographs outside.

Sophie, occasionally using a wheelchair adorned with butterflies and fairy lights, posed for official photographs taken by Emma Stoszkowski.

Sophie’s mum, Fiona Page, of Raffles, Carlisle, said: “She did amazing. I am so proud. On Thursday night we thought the wedding might not happen as Sophie took a turn for the worse and she had to stay in the hospice. But she improved overnight and made it to the ceremony.”

A wedding breakfast was served in the afternoon followed by a DJ set later - and the first dance.

Fiona said: “Sophie was given a room where she could rest at the hotel and Hospice at Home came in case she needed anything.”

Sophie and Lee spent the first night of their married lives at The Halston Hotel on Warwick Road.

Fiona said: “We’d like to thank Wendy Ashton from Wish for a Wedding for everything. She has organised it and to the Eden Valley Hospice, Hospice at Home and everyone who donated their time and things to ensure Sophie and Lee had a day to remember.”

Geoff Brown, who drove the Cadillac, said: “It was a pleasure and an honour to do this for Sophie and Lee. Sophie was struggling a bit but that’s to be expected. She looked lovely.

“We had a ride around Carlisle in the car.

“The girls were bouncing.”

Sophie, of Denton Holme, was recently told that she had just months to live after her tumour had grown more quickly than expected and become very aggressive.
