Rare archive films dating back up to ninety years will be available to view at Keswick's Alhambra Cinema next month.

The footage provides an interesting insight into life in lakeland and Cumbria in days gone by and will be shown at a special nostalgia night on May 17.

Cumbria Film Archive and the Alhambra have joined forces to display the unique film footage, which will include atmospheric footage of the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railway line, The Carlisle Pageant, held in 1928 and a rare Second World War film about the driving and maintenance school, which was based in Keswick.

The war film is from around 1943 and was shot as preparations were underway for D-day. Jeeps, motorbike and Bren gun carriers were all put through their paces on the lakeland fells.

Andrew Leitch, producer of The Cumbria Film Archive thinks the Alhambra venue will be the perfect venue to host the film night. He said: “The Keswick cinema is the perfect venue for this event. It was built in 1913 and is one of the very few picture houses in the country that has been in continuous operation for over a hundred years. It is so appropriate that we are able to show an evening of Cumbria’s archive films at the Alhambra. I’m sure it is going to be a lovely atmosphere and a very special event.

"I think that the evening will be the nearest thing that the audience will get to time travel."

The Cumbria Film Archive event called Lost Cumbria on Film will be held on May 17 and starts at 8pm. Tickets are £7.50 for the balcony and £6.50 for the stalls. Friends of the Alhambra and under 21s get reduced admission.
