A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder.

Martin Bozhkov, 20, of Warwick Road, was arrested following an incident in the city during the early hours of Friday.

Police were called to an incident involving two workers at the DHL depot at the Pirelli factory, off Dalston Road, Carlisle, just after 3am.

It is alleged that the victim, 43-year-old Michael Kadlcik, was repeatedly stabbed.

He suffered a punctured lung, along with injuries to his head, abdomen, back and legs and had to undergo surgery at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

He has now been released from hospital.

Following the incident, Bozhkov was charged with attempted murder.

He also faces a second allegation of possession of a bladed article.

He appeared at North and West Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Carlisle this morning.

Using a translator, he spoke only to confirm his name and address.

Dark-haired with a beard, Bozhkov wore a dark-coloured T-shirt and remained standing throughout.

Chief prosecutor Isla Chilton set out the case against him, though no pleas were entered.

The case sent to Carlisle Crown Court, where he will appear on May 27.

Bozhkov was remanded in custody until that date.
