Three police officers needed medical treatment after coming into contact with a hazardous substance in Carlisle.
They were called to a property in Mayfield Avenue, Harraby, at about 8pm yesterday.
A Cumbria police spokesman said: "Inside the address what is believed to have been a pepper spray-type substance had been discharged."
The force today confirmed that three officers needed treatment after coming into contact with that substance.
Firefighters - who wore Hazmat suits to check the property - were called to the scene, along with paramedics. They made the area safe.
The police spokesman added: "There was no risk to the wider public."
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service explained: "Three police officers at the property were treated, after coming into contact with the substance. Their injuries are not thought to be serious."
Two men - aged in their 20s - were arrested and remained in custody this morning.
Anyone who can help police with their investigation into what happened should call officers on 101.
