Uniting, is the key to fighting stigma, this is the message Carlisle Islamic Centre want to give to the community.

For the first time in their history, the centre will be opening their doors to the public, offering an open invitation and a chance to see what a mosque is really like.

In light of the recent attacks in Christchurch, where two terrorist attacks happened at mosques in the New Zealand city, Carlisle held a solidarity vigil and the Islamic community want to give people the chance to step into their shoes.

Aftab Khan, Community Development Manager, AWAZ Cumbria, said: "Following the recent attack in Christchurch; Carlisle Mosque, Carlisle Cathedral and AWAZ organised a Solidarity Vigil in Carlisle City Centre. In times like these, it’s better to unite. We want this event to echo the same sentiment."

The event, part of the Cumbria Community Integration Project, aims to strengthen minority communities, provide English language support and promote interfaith harmony.

Nicole Cottingham, Community Development Worker, AWAZ Cumbria, said: "We want to break down barriers of perception by giving people the opportunity to visit their local mosque.

"I know people won’t walk into the mosque without an invitation, it seems intimidating, because it’s unknown."

She continued: "Im sure there are many people who wouldn't think about going into a Mosque without an invitation. We want to invite people to come in and break down those barriers."

The event will be held at the Brook Street mosque and Ms Cottingham said: "It happens to come at the same time as the incident in Christchurch, that's not the reason why we're having the event, but it maybe a good time to engage with people, because it's at the forefront of their minds."

Nicole is actively asking people to come in, be nosy and to bring family along as they have different activities on for all ages.

There will be opportunities to try on traditional clothes, look round the building, learn Arabic writing and get a henna tattoo. Members of the faith will be on hand to answer all questions hoping to break down barriers.

The open day will be in two parts on Thursday, April, 11, there will be a morning session between 10am and 12pm then between 2pm and 4pm.
