Twice a week Wigton’s methodist church hosts a foodbank service for those in need.

Every Tuesday and Friday from 10am to 12pm, the High Street church host the North Lakes Foodbank which is staffed wholly by volunteers.

At this time of year, foodbanks see fewer donations following peaks at Harvest and Christmas and are appealing for people to donate anything they can.

In particular, the foodbank is in need of items including jam, rice pudding, tinned fruit, biscuits and cereal.

Project Manager at North Lakes Foodbank, Adrian Cozens, said: “Our mission isn’t just to give out food but to signpost clients in order that they can receive the right advice or guidance.

“As such Wigton is one of the three centres which has a Citizens’ Advice worker present at each session.”

Across Allerdale and Copeland there was a five percent increase in usage compared to the 2017/18 year. Specifically in Wigton there was an 80 percent increase in the number of vouchers fulfilled - increasing from 99 to 178 - giving three day emergency food to over 400 people in crisis.
