A RAFT of events to bring families back to Whitehaven town centre have been announced.

Gerard Richardson, who used to organise the town's maritime festival, is working with the town council to deliver four family-friendly events.

A model-making and family fun day is due to be held on May 31. People will have a chance to make their own Lego creations as well as enjoy family-friendly entertainment.

On June 14 a Cumbrian Traders market will see the region's businesses flock to St Nicholas gardens to celebrate all things Cumbria.

And a photographic exhibition will also be hosted there on June 17. People are being encouraged to enter a competition to submit their pictures for a chance to win vouchers to spend in the town centre.

Mr Richardson said: "We want people who live in the community to send their best photos regardless of where they've taken them. It doesn't have to be a picture they took either, it could be a great picture they have in their family archive."

A paper aeroplane workshop is due to be held on July 20. Mr Richardson said: "We're all concerned about how much time children spend in front of their computers and this is a chance to do something different. It's just a nice old-fashioned hobby." Prizes will be handed out for different categories, including the plane with the longest flight.

He added: "The aim of the events is to get people into the town centre again."
