THIS week, we have asked our readers to pass on their advice on where the best sandwich/baguette shop is in Carlisle, plus north and west Cumbria.

We received more than 400 comments on the News & Star Facebook page, with lots of recommendations for places across the area.

In no particular order, here are the best places in the county to get a sandwich, as voted for by you, our readers.

1 CRUMBS, DALSTON & DENTON HOLME

The sandwich shop, on Denton Holme, received an abundance of positive comments.

Andy Clode said: “Crumbs of Dalston and Denton Holme, the best food and brilliant staff.”

Andrew Megson: “Crumbs at Dalston, great food and super staff simply the best.”

Graham Elliot added: “Crumbs in Dalston and Denton Holme by far, staff are friendly and welcoming.”

2 ROLL TOPPERS, CARLISLE

The London Road shop won lots of praise from readers, including Louise Noble and Emma Fallowfield.

Dawn Sheehan said: “Roll Toppers is the best sandwich shop this side of Cumbria, not just Carlisle.”

Lauren Crossan said: “Always fresh service with a smile.”

Graham Moore added: “Fantastic choice and fantastic staff great service, very reasonably priced, five star all the way.”

3 CAFE CENTRAL, CARLISLE

Based on Central Avenue in Harraby, the cafe collected a number of comments.

Corrin Clarke said: “Cafe Central Carlisle - my new favourite spot for baguettes (and cakes).”

Stephen Clarke added: “Cafe Central, Harraby. all day long. The best breakfasts and sandwiches in Cumbria.”

Lee Parkin said: “Their baguettes are to die for. Cumberland sausage, chilli con carne, cheese and jalapeño.

“Nothing is ever too much trouble either, fantastic family business.”

4 SANDWICH HEAVEN, WORKINGTON

Cara Baxter posted: “Sandwich Heaven in Workington has a huge variety and it all looks and tastes delicious.”

5 JULIE’S SANDWICH SHOP, COCKERMOUTH

The store on Main Street was recommended by Chris Lewis.

Chris said: “The most filled and tastiest sandwiches ever, for a decent price.

“Always queued out of the door at lunch times.”

Joyce Messenger added: “Never had better.”

6 BLACK JUG CATERING, CARLISLE

Haig Murray recommended this sandwich shop,based on Tait Street.

He said: “My first choice for everything from sandwich fillings to hot meals, all freshly homemade on the premises. Their lentil soup, and ham sandwiches are second to none.

“I also know they have gluten free options, including a breakfast.”

7 TASTY BITES, CARLISLE

The cafe was recommended by Kezza Michelle.

She said: “Tasty Bites on Fusehill Street, breakfast baguette is unreal with side of homemade white chocolate Malteaser cake.”
