A LOCAL lighting store is trying to help people to make the right choices for their homes when considering illumination.

The choice in lighting – fittings, shades, bulbs – is huge. If you’ve ever wandered through a lighting shop, or looked online for a particular lamp, wall light or ceiling light, you will appreciate the vast ranges that are available to choose from. It can be mind-boggling.

Limelighting, occupying the auditorium of a theatre in Cockermouth, not only has a great selection, but also 30 years of expertise to help you select exactly the right illumination for every room in the house.

Sue Hannah and her staff know how important it is to achieve the right ambiance in any room, and offers advice for ensuring you don’t make potentially expensive lighting mistakes.

Her top tip is to visit a shop to see what they have in stock, and talk to the staff about your requirements.

She says: “The internet is great, but colours are not always accurately replicated in images online. For example, when the lampshade you’ve bought arrives, it might not be the colour it looked, so you then have to return the item and start searching again.

“At Limelighting, we’ll chat with you about what you’re looking for. Which room it’s for, what the colour scheme is, what sort of lighting effect you want, and if we can’t find what you want in stock, we can try to source it from our suppliers.

“Or we can make adjustments to fittings, like shortening a chain if your ceilings are lower. Some wall lights will have the facility to point in different directions, which is not always obvious from an image on a website.”

The value of talking to an expert can’t be overemphasised. As Sue says, lighting is a rapidly changing product – more of a fashion item these days – and, in her previous business in electrical contracting, it was her customers’ complaints about not being able to find the lighting they wanted that spurred her and husband into setting up a retail home lighting business.

In the shop, they carry about 75 different ranges of fittings; hundreds of shades, around a hundred table lamps, and “as many bulbs as we can get hold of.”

Bulbs can also create different effects in different rooms. Sue recommends cool white for work areas, such as bathrooms and kitchens, and warm white for bedrooms and the lounge.

Sue’s tip when buying LED bulbs - which are the future for cost-saving and the environment – is always buy branded. They may be a bit more expensive, but they will be worth it in the long run.
