PLANS have been revealed to replace a well used bus shelter near a Workington cemetery.

Workington Town Council is behind plans to replace the facility at Salterbeck cemetery.

The project is expected to cost around £3,750, with £3,000-worth of funding already pledged by the town council.

The district council is expected to provide the remainder of the cash.

Councillor Denise Rollo, chairman of the town council’s environment committee, said: “This is for the benefit of everyone in the town. That particular bus shelter is used by everyone who visits the cemetery using public transport.

“Other bus shelters are more likely to benefit just one community and, of course, there’s nothing wrong with that, but we thought the one at Salterbeck should take priority because it is used by the whole town.

“We did similar work with the ones by Morrisons, which again are used by many people who go to the shop by bus.”

The town council is yet to decide on the design of the bus shelter.

At a meeting last week, the environment committee were told the facility was too corroded to be refurbished.

The shelter is currently owned by Allerdale council, but once it is replaces it would become responsibility of the town council.
