A motorist involved in a police pursuit has admitted dangerous driving - but was told by a judge he won't be jailed for the offence.

Frazer Jack Ross, 24, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court on Wednesday.

Ross admitted driving a Mini dangerously on the A596 at Flimby on January 8 this year.

The charge arises out of an incident at around 9.50pm which is said to have lasted 10 minutes and included a police pursuit. During a previous court hearing, Ross, of Ennerdale Road, Maryport, had admitted driving without insurance and otherwise than in accordance with his licence.

He was said in court to be a man of previous good character.

Judge Peter Davies adjourned the case. Ross is due to be sentenced at the crown court later this month, and in the meantime was granted bail and given an interim driving ban.

"You have pleaded guilty to a serious offence. You understand that," said Judge Davies.

"It involved a police pursuit. That takes it over the custodial threshold, but I am not going to impose an immediate custodial sentence on you.

"There will be a suspended sentence of imprisonment or, if your barrister can persuade me, a community punishment - (but) she will be working very hard to do that."
