Copeland council is inviting the community to join its staff in two litter picks as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

Colleagues will team up with members of the public in Mirehouse and Whitehaven town centre on April 8.

Picks will take place from 10am until midday on the footpaths crossing the cycle path at Mirehouse, with volunteers to meet at the entrance to the cycle path adjoining Uldale Road, then 1pm until 3pm in Whitehaven town centre at Rosemary Lane, at the rear of Albion Square. Those taking part will spread along the Brows path through Arrowthwaite Woods, up to Kells.

All equipment will be provided.

Copeland mayor Mike Starkie said: "We're very supportive of the Great British Spring Clean as it echoes many of the aims of our Copeland Pride of Place campaign.

"The areas we live, work and walk in every day are often attractive and peaceful, but as a community we have to choose to look after them.

"Hopefully events like this will inspire people not to litter."

Councillor Mark Holliday, portfolio holder for customers and communities, added: "Our staff are really keen to get into the community and get involved in these clean-ups.

"We have run them before and they've been popular.

"The Great British Spring Clean is a national campaign and it's great that we can play our part.

"However it would be even better if people chose not to drop litter at these beauty spots in the first place - we would always urge people to take pride in their communities and take their litter home."
