Two flood warnings and 22 flood alerts are now in place across Cumbria as Storm Gareth continues to hit.
The Environment Agency has now issued a flood warning - the second highest alert level - for Carlisle. The warning is in place for the river Eden at Rickerby Park, Swifts and Stoneyholme Golf Course.
A spokesperson for the EA, speaking about the Carlisle warning, said: "We expect river levels to peak just above the flood warning level at Linstock around 5pm."
The River Caldew has already burst its banks in Denton Holme, flooding grassed areas.
At least one road in the county is blocked by floodwater.
Police say the B5301, near Aspatria, is closed at Arkleby Bridge due to flooding.
Surface water is also causing problems, and motorists are warned to take extra care.
It comes after a night of wet and windy weather across the county.
There were reports of trees coming down in Copeland overnight, and standing water causing hazardous driving conditions.
Roads in Dalston, near Carlisle, are also heavily waterlogged.
The Met Office has issued a heavy rain warning, covering Cumbria, which runs until lunchtime today.
Storm Gareth is also bringing strong winds across from Ireland, continuing throughout today and tomorrow.
Gusts of up to 70mph could hit coastal areas, it warns.
The Environment Agency began issuing flood alerts as river levels rose yesterday.
There are now a total of 23 areas at risk.
The worst-affected areas are Rickerby Park and Keswick Campsite, next to Derwentwater. Flood warnings, meaning flooding is likely, is in force here.
A further 22 river catchments are on flood alert, meaning flooding is possible.
Residents and businesses are urged to be prepared.
