The body responsible for most of Cumbria's roads has warned drivers to take extra care while driving tonight.

Cumbria County Council's Highways department, which operates the county council's fleet of gritter trucks, has cautioned road users to be mindful of ice on the roads this evening, particularly on higher ground.

The statement from Cumbria Highways said: "scattered showers will continue through the evening and at times overnight, falling as sleet or snow on high ground."

Road surface temperature will fall close to zero or lower on higher ground tonight, and Cumbria Highways added that further showers are set to take place tomorrow morning.

County council gritter trucks have been in operation on a large number of roads today across Cumbria, in anticipation of possible icy conditions through the night and into tomorrow.
