Youngsters will take to the stage to showcase their moves as part of a county-wide festival to celebrate their achievements in dance.

More than 1,500 schoolchildren and young people across Cumbria are due to get involved in this year's U Dance, provided through Active Cumbria.

The non-competitive event brings together pupils of all ages to choreograph dance and share their achievements through performance.

Youngsters work alongside a professional dancer to create their routine ahead of the event, which offers a unique opportunity to perform to a live audience in a professional setting.

The event takes place at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington on March 11 and 12.

Following performances by secondary schools at Theatre by the Lake last month, the event now moves on to celebrate creativity in primary schools.

Pupils will have the opportunity to perform on a professional stage to a live audience.

Schools taking part are: Grasslot Infant School in Maryport, Fairfield Primary School in Cockermouth, Bridekirk Dovenby Primary School, Kells Infant School in Whitehaven, Seascale Primary School, Ennerdale & Kinniside Primary School, Flimby Primary School, Frizington Community Primary School, St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Frizington, Ashfield Infant and Junior schools in Workington, Bookwell Primary School in Egremont, Dearham Primary School, Moor Row Primary School, St Begh's Junior School in Whitehaven, Ellenborough & Ewanrigg Infant School in Maryport, St Herbert's School in Keswick, St Patrick's Primary School in Cleator Moor, and St Gregory's & St Patrick's School in Whitehaven.

U Dance co-ordinator Lynn Barnes said: “U Dance Cumbria is such a brilliant celebration of achievement. The children are always so excited to perform and they give their all on stage. It’s testament to the popularity of this event that it is always over-subscribed.”
