FORMER Barrow Raiders head coach Steve McCormack is leaving his job as player welfare manager at Wigan to take up a full-time role with the charity Rugby League Cares.

McCormack is the sport's first transition manager, working alongside full-time players as they approach the end of their careers to help them prepare for life after rugby.

The creation of the post comes just a few weeks after Rugby League Cares took on full responsibility from the Rugby Football League for delivering the sport's player welfare programme.

McCormack said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I can't wait to get stuck into helping players across the game.

"I've been involved in working with players on planning for what they're going to do after their rugby careers are over since I first got into coaching at Salford in 1998."
