IT WILL be a tall order to outdo the celebrations being planned by one Carlisle charity.

As the grand finale to mark Carlisle Mencap’s 50th anniversary, the charity will be holding a 145ft bungee jump at Creighton Rugby Club in the south of the city.

Taking place on Sunday, June 16 as part of a weekend of fundraising events, Carlisle Mencap - which supports people with learning disabilities across Cumbria - are currently on the lookout for anyone aged 14 or older brave enough to give bungee jumping a go.

Phil Taylor, Carlisle Mencap’s events and fundraising manager, hopes the event is a hit with local thrill-seekers.

“We’d love people to come forward and take the plunge by getting sponsors and then experiencing the thrill of a bungee jump,” he said.

The bungee jump will be the centrepiece of a summer fun day, with stands, gift stalls, children’s entertainment, refreshments and a bar all on offer.

The night before, Jimi Hendrix tribute band Are You Experienced? will be headlining a concert at the Brickyard in Fisher Street, all in aid of fundraising for the charity.

“We believe it will be all part of a memorable weekend as we’re also thrilled to have the very talented John Campbell and his Jimi Hendrix tribute band taking to the stage at The Brickyard,” Phil added.

Carlisle Mencap are currently supporting more than 500 adults and children with learning disabilities across the county.

The charity runs children’s centres Carlisle, Penrith and Ulverston.

It also runs an adult’s centre in north Carlisle.

Carlisle Mencap offers a range of support and respite services, including short breaks for adults at California House and for children at the Grace Little Centre, both in Carlisle.

The charity also provides children’s home-based respite services, as well as community support and a range of other services.

While this summer’s bungee jump is open to anyone aged 14 or alder, anyone aged between 14 and 16 must have a parent or guardian present on the day.

Anyone aged 50 and above must have a doctor’s certificate to participate, and people of any age interested in taking part must generally be in good health.
