Forty drivers were caught committing crimes at danger junctions.

Police have issued the motorists with fines for offences from running red lights to speeding.

Undercover and higher-profile patrols were in Stanwix, Carlisle, on Friday.

Officers have taken action after community concerns were raised about danger drivers running red lights at one of the busiest intersections in the city.

The operation centred on the Scotland Road area and its lights with the junctions of Etterby Street, Mulcaster Crescent and also around Briar Bank, Belah.

Fines and penalty points were issued to five drivers who jumped red lights, Cumbria police said.

Another 12 drivers were issued fines for driving while using a mobile phone.

Meanwhile, 21 people were caught speeding and two people were not wearing their seatbelts.

A survey before the action took place recorded 51 vehicles in a single day running red lights on Scotland Road at Mulcaster Crescent and Etterby Street.

Police hope the action that has taken place will act as a warning to drivers to heed the law, as well as quelling some of residents’ safety fears.

And they have warned motorists that their attention to the area is far from over.

PC Norman Black, a collision reduction officer, said of the offences spotted: “Driving in this manner puts drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and the motorists themselves, along with any passengers, at risk.

“This operation will be repeated in future, utilising both covert and high visibility officers in uniform.

“We would urge all road users to follow the law and rules of the road - and think of their safety and other people’s safety at all times.”

Community leaders in Stanwix have previously welcomed the action being taken.

City councillor Paul Nedved described running red lights as “mindless”, adding: “It has been a problem in our area, with the issue raised by Councillor Mallinson, Councillor Robson, and myself over the years.”
