Work has begun to restore sea defences at Maryport to help protect the coastline from erosion.

The dilapidated groyne south of the lighthouse near the harbour wall is being repaired by Thomas Armstrong on behalf of Allerdale council.

Once restored, it will allow beach shingle and sand to build up on the south side, protecting the sandstone sea wall which forms part of the town's sea defences.

It will also help protect a site of special scientific interest.

Funding for the £58k project is coming from the Environment Agency.

Councillor Barbara Cannon, executive member responsible for the council’s property, said: “I’m really pleased to see that the work is starting on restoring the groyne which will play a key part in protecting against damage caused by the sea.

"I’d also like to thank all the partners who have worked together on this.”

Work is expected to take several weeks, and people are asked to keep away until it is finished for their own safety.
